Mayerling, the story of Archduke Rudolf, who "committed suicide" out of love for Baroness Maria Vetsera during the 19th century Austro-Hungarian empire had its first film version in 1936 with performances by Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux as Crown Prince Rudolf and Maria Vetsera
Years later in 1968 the story got its second version from director Terence Young, originally planned for Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer, but for last minute problems, ended up starring in the film Omar Shariff and Catherine Deneuve
Catherine gave an interview that although the date is a little unknown to me, it could have been in 1969 or 1970, where she spoke in a fragment about the film
“Mayerling, in Terence Young’s version, is also expected to be the event of his return. Have you seen the first Mayerling that of Anatole Litvak, which dates back to 1936, and in which Danielle Darrieux, at an age when you were not yet born, was, along with Charles Boyer, this Marie Vetsera who you will play as Omar Shariff?
—No, I didn’t want to see Mayerling. As much as I admire Danielle Darrieux, I also thought it was unnecessary to attend the screening of a film from which I had no profit. In the audiovisual century, everything goes out of style very quickly. With the exception of a few exceptions, movie classics are not immune to this phenomenon of accelerated wear. So if Mayerling from 1968 tells the same story as the previous one, it’s another movie. I think it would be a mistake to talk about a new version”
