57 / 100 Poster Series - 1917 - The Night Window [SWIPE] - 1917 an cinematic archivement created by Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins along with Thomas Newman and 100 extras. I came along several memorable scenes which stood out to me based on pacing, their musical choice and their camera work. This movie feels like a piece of theatre on every take, just non stop and the one shot-technique surely helps with that. With such an immersive and personal story, making us feel every breath while seemingly walking with them, the entire time. While it seems to have a rather simple premise it most certainly does not lack gripping story beats.
Where it all comes together is in the scene known as "The Night Window".Deakins and Newman flex their muscles. We start with the single "dripping" sounds of the piano and end with the great swelling sounds of the whole orchestra seemingly rolling over the protagonist. As he runs from the light chasing him as he tries to find shelter. Our pulse ebbs and flows with this scene, just when he finally found a place to hide we too can catch a breath.
This poster is created by using my favorite scene and tracing it onto the numbers from the title. Much like in the original, yet I created those numbers myself, changed the orientation and drew this scene with pencil and charcoal on paper. Will Schofield recites The verse from the french poem "The Jumblies" by Edward Lear in the very next scene, which perfectly summarizes the journey they have taken on. So it had to be included. This poster layout will most likely be re-used by choosing another memorable scene, where I take the musical queue as a starting off point once again. watching this movie in theatre was an experience which left me completely shell shocked, a spectacle that will long stand the test of time.
