Today we decided to spotlight these lovely and rather calm winter scenes by wood engraver and compositor Miriam Macgregor from her 2012 Whittington Press publication, 'Midwinter.' The book includes 23 wood engravings (two in color) with letterpress-printed observations printed in an edition of 265 copies on Zerkall mould-made paper. Ours is one of 185 copies full-bound in printed papers and is signed by the artist.
Macgregor is an Indian-born artist who arrived in England when she was ten. Trained at Hastings Art School, she began working for the Whittington Press in 1976, and has continued to illustrate many of their publications, as well as those for the Folio Society. Of her wood engravings, Whittington co-owner John Randle observes, “There is a life and vigour in Miriam’s engravings that was evident even in those engravings she brought to the Press in 1976, and a warmth in her figures … that perhaps reflects the warmth of her own personality.”
