Diamantis Diamantopoulos - The Man Killed to Death (1978-80)
Oil on canvas, 126.5 x 90 cm.
One can see this composition as an inverted version of Mantegna's Dead Christ. Overwhelming in scale, poignant in its austerity, this work belongs to the most emblematic of the entire work of Diamantopoulos. The volumes that make up the body build up the composition in twists and foreshortenings reminiscent of figures by 16th-century italian Mannerists. Above all, this work underlines the importance sculpture had for Diamantopoulos. It is also clear that, in his constant fight with the shaping of volumes, the gradations of colors, and the pace of light for his painting, the values of sculpture did play a decisive role.
