#handsonyourback -an excerpt from yesterdays LIVE mini #wordshop
Many years ago I was on a training ride
And I was tired as we commenced a climb
and as I started to lose my momentum and slip behind
I felt this hand on my back
Our bikes were so close our handlebars nearly touching and I know I got a little shaky
But my teammate was so calm and so steady
and so at ease-
and I could hear them breathe
and the steadiness of their breath
shifted the rhythm of my breath
and I felt my own momentum pick up again
and I flew to the top with the rest
The impact of that moment
left an indelible mark on my heart
It's the story I carry
about how strong I think I am or wish to be or fear I'm not
and the dance of doubt
and the audacity of confidence
and the dare
always the dare- to ask
could I be capable of what I dream?
20 years ago the dream was to race.
I’ve come to realize it was never actually about a bike or a race.
It was to discover the unknown athlete of the heart,
to discover the ability to ask oneself, what if I can? What if I can make it through whatever challenge is before me?
To prove this: that I am alive, truly ALIVE
To experience the whole gamut of joy+fear +disappointment+hope+frustration+focus+the scattered crazies of distraction+self medication
to get derailed and think impossible things
and to be re-railed to believe the I'M-possible things,
to learn that the space between I CAN'T and the I CAN that we find at the impasse of a T,
is only words, words you can change in your head and on paper by sounds you make and lines you draw.
If you feel compelled to place your hand on someone's back, you should- in whatever way you can-
Whatever we carry,
the fear ,the hope, the diagnosis, the loss, the weight, the empty space,
the weight OF the empty space,
we all feel the weight of it,
if perhaps we can all take a deep breath and drop our shoulders and drop the weight of the bag on our backs,
we may make space to feel the weight of the hands on our back,
and so we move. We rise.
