Beautiful bird, gross pond. I photographed this handsome adult Black-crowned Night Heron (BCNH) a few weeks ago while heading home from my sister's house. I took an alternate route that day and drove past a retention pond where several species of waterfowl and numerous BCNH were present. None of the waterfowl were close enough for me to get decent pictures, so I nabbed a few photos of this super obliging individual who was standing at the edge. As their name suggests, BCNH are most active at twilight and night, usually foraging in shallow water along the edges of ponds and other small water bodies. The flight call of this species is a single noted "quok" which sounds somewhat like a bark. The first time I heard a BCNH vocalize, I was honestly was a little thrown. This common species nests colonially in trees and shrubs, often with other herons. One last fun fact is that this species nests on every continent except for Australia and Antarctica!
