CONTROL WHAT YOU CAN Years ago the concept of the meat and nuts breakfast was introduced to my by Charles Poliquin. At the time I thought it sounded really weird but figured “this guy has trained medalist in 22 different sports and countless NFL, MLB, and NHL players. Maybe I should at least try it”. I immediately noticed better energy throughout the day, especially mid morning. I also noticed improved body composition. Sticking to mainly just protein and fat in the morning will keep your blood sugar levels low and stable, and keep you in the fat burning state. It will also set up your neurotransmitter production for the day. The meat and nuts breakfast raises dopamine and acetylcholine, two important neurotransmitters for focus and drive. Cooking meat isn’t always the most convenient first thing in the morning so when we cook dinner I always make sure there’s left overs. I don’t typically eat more than 6oz of cooked protein per meal as I feel much more than that isn’t going to be absorbed by the body. Morning is also a good time to get some veggies and supplements in. I use almond or cashew butter over broccoli and don’t really even taste the broccoli. Pro tip- Know where your strengths lie. If you hate using 38 different bowls to cook, and suck at making sauces and side dishes that generally taste and look good, volunteer to stand in the cold rain and grill. Attacking Monday like Side note - front squatting using straps, as Matt is doing here, can allow you to train around a wrist or elbow injury. If you can’t quite achieve a proper front rack, these straps will allow the spine and shoulder complex mechanics to remain the same while adjusting the wrist position and stress at the forearm/elbow. If you can maintain proper thoracic spine and scapula position it will allow for better stability and function through the low back and pelvis. The pistol squat has a myriad of benefits, as well as scaling options. In addition to implementing this movement as an “exercise” we also like to use it as a diagnostic tool to assess range of motion, strength, and neuromuscular control. Movement screening can greatly help us understand how to improve your performance and decrease risk of injury. Hypoxic feels? CO2 Tolerance Training It is widely known that you need oxygen to be delivered to your tissues in order to maintain exertion levels. However, many people don’t understand the role carbon dioxide (CO2) plays in breathing and cardiorespiratory fitness. The level of CO2 in our body is what controls respiration. When CO2 reaches a certain level (set point) there is a signal sent from the breathing center in your brainstem to the muscles of respiration triggering you to breathe. A low CO2 set point will stimulate excessive breathing during exertion. When you breathe you exhale the CO2 that has built up in your body. The problem with this is that CO2 helps buffer hydrogen ion production and lactic acid. In short, when you have a low CO2 set point you wind up over-releasing CO2 during exertion and thus accelerate acidosis. Lactic acid production makes it very difficult to maintain intensity levels. Integrating CO2 tolerance training allows us to improve our athletes’ CO2 set point. This improved CO2 tolerance allows them to better regulate breathing so that their bodies have more CO2 available during exertion to buffer elevated acid levels. Accidentally created my own drama at the Armor Classic. Went 1 for 3 on the snatch with 67k requiring a 99k (~218lbs) C&J to get a 166k total to support nationals. 99k was a 6k meet PR.
