A cuppa, some chocolate and an escape to “Dream Island”...little indulgences to enjoy at the moment.
In the 1920s, Ronald Lockley moved into a derelict farmhouse on the remote island of Skokholm, just off the coast of South Wales. While renovating his new home, eking out a living from fishing, rabbiting, and farming, he spent twelve years studying the bird life, flora and fauna of his “Dream Island”, acquiring along the way, a wife and daughter.
I really enjoyed this book; it is a wonderful account. I would love to have visited the island in those days when the bird life was so plentiful, it is hard to imagine such numbers now.
One of my favourite quotes from the book: “There would be no need for locks and keys in my home” says the author as he sets to and makes new doors for his house (from shipwrecked timbers). Also included in the photo is R. M. Lockley’s “Birds Of The Sea”, one of my King Penguins.
