I’ve seen several Eastern Box Turtles but this was the first one I’ve seen outside of my own county.🐢 As the temperature starts to drop Eastern Box Turtles will begin their hibernation process. The turtle will burrow into loose soil, sand, mud, or even use an abandoned mammal burrow. Eastern Box Turtles have been found hibernating at depths of two feet. As winter approaches the turtles body will essentially shut down. All of its organs will change pace so that they are providing the most minimal output possible while still maintaining life. The turtle will not need any food and the oxygen level in its blood will drop to near zero.
