“Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it”. Let’s face it,we often get upset when we’re told don’t be scared, be bold, it will be ok. The fact is, only those going through the emotion of fear actually know what it feels like to be in that position. Whether we’re battling fear about a health issue, financial troubles or a broken relationship, it can feel overwhelming and insurmountable. *
Addressing fear, can be especially challenging for men. We grow up being told, be brave, boys don’t cry, be a man, there’s nothing to fear - it’s all in your head. Truth be told, it can be real - VERY REAL and for someone going through it, that’s the last thing you tell them.
If you’re the one battling fearful thoughts, just pause and take a few deep breaths until you feel a bit settled. Shut your eyes and ask yourself these questions:
* Where does this emotion stem from?
* Does this fear belong to me or is it someone else’s projected on me?
* Why have I made it my reality?
* What’s something doable, that can help me overcome it?
Remember, fear isn’t failure. It’s ans aspect of your life that needs healing.
And, for those who have a loved one, friend or someone you know. Just, let them know you’re there for them. Don’t try to play ‘hero’ and feel the need to have an answer. Be a good listener, don’t operate from judgement or try to project your views strongly upon them. They don’t need a sermon, they need someone to walk with them, someone who can be what they need in that moment. Just LISTEN!
