As humans, we have the wonderful cognitive ability to work out what might happen in the future (tomorrow/next week/five years from now) based on what we have learnt in the past (through experience or knowledge) which is why we are far more advanced than any other species. However this ability to overthink can also be our biggest hinderance.
Our thoughts can become dominated by either what has happened in the past or what could possibly go wrong in the future. Even now you may well be thinking about all the things you need to do over the weekend or what might cause stress next week. But worry is all just imagining a time that is not now. And when we allow our thoughts to keep projecting themselves onto all the things that might go wrong in the future, we miss all of life that is ok and the enjoyable little moments contained within it.
Beneath all these overthinking thoughts though, there is a stillness within us where we can simply be aware of what is happening in this very moment. Not what will happen in 5 minutes or the rest of the day, but just what is happening right now.
Perhaps you are just sitting looking at your phone. Perhaps you are just breathing.
It is a skill, but the more you practise this awareness, the more you’ll find the majority of actual moments you are in, are absolutely fine.
