I was looking for a humid, mosquitoe-infested, small-scene, in woodland tonight.. I found that, BUT I found three great blue herons, of which this one was alpha and primary overwatch of the big nest on this tree.
I didn't have my long lens, but I wanted something to remember this moment.. watching an absolutely confident, magnificent bird taking charge of the environment of which it is responsible for life and death.
Rather than reach for a shot at the top of the tree, I shot the closer reflection in the calm water. The image is flipped vertically. My way of sneaking up on her. And the water bug's ripple effect adds a little more magic to the scene. (I added images 2 & 3 so you get an idea of what I was looking at.) #greatblueheron
